When Shakespeare was born in 1564, Elizabeth I (shown on the image) had been Queen of England since November 17th 1558. She was the daughter of Henry VIII and was crowned on January 15th 1559, and died on the 24th March 1603.
Elizabeth had many suitors but never married and on her death James VI of Scotland became James I of England. James was the son of Mary, Queen of Scots.
