In 1896 an ambitious feat of engineering, saw the development of a rack and pinion railway, which rises to within 66ft of the summit of Snowdon, -the highest mountain in England and Wales at 3,560ft (1085m). The train can be caught at Llanberis in the Snowdonia National Park.
