The London Underground or tube is an electric railway covering Greater London. It runs both above and underground. It is the oldest underground system in the world and one of the three largest in the world. Operations began in 1863 on the Metropolitan railway now largely part of the Hammersmith and City Line. It serves 274 stations and runs over 253 miles of line. In 2004–2005, it carried 976,000,000 passengers, an average of 2,670,000 per day. Pictured December 2005
