Markets have a long history In the middle ages the right to hold a market was one of the most valuable privileges that could be granted by a king or a lord to a group of his subjects. Growing towns would secure a charter allowing this trade which was a source of considerable wealth for a town and a source of revenue for the king. The charter outlined the conditions and days when a market could be held. Important buildings often grew up around markets. Markets still provide income for councils and sellers. Bedford Market pictured is held every Wednesday and Saturday.
