Part of the former Dunstable Priory, originally founded by Henry I in 1131. Home to an order of canons who ruled the town. They possessed power of life and death, had their own priory gaol and they sat as judges with the king's justices. Many people were tired on a variety of crimes, including witchcraft as in the story.
