King Henry I founded the town of Dunstable in 1100 at the ancient crossroads of Watling Street and the Icknield Way. He granted Dunstable a Market Charter (shown in the picture) in 1131 by Henry I. The town is situated in the hundred of Manshead in the county of Bedford, eighteen miles south-by-west from Bedford, and thirty-three miles north-west-by-north from London. Upwards of 35,000 people now live within the town's boundaries.
