Throughout history there have been reports of strange lights in the sky but interest in UFO's really took of in the 1940's and 50's. Science fiction books including HG Wells’s classic "War of the Worlds" made people consider the possibility of alien life forms. The novel was broadcast on the radio on October 30, 1938. It was enacted as if it were mainstream media report of an attack on Earth by creatures from the planet Mars and was taken seriously by many listeners causing widespread panic.
