At the first witchcraft trial in England (July 1565 -Chelmsford Essex), Agnes Waterhouse was found guilty of 'bewitching to death' and hanged two days later. This trial was the first of many in which owning a cat (familiar) was used as evidence in the trial. During the next 150 years thousands of women and quite a few pets were condemned to death.
