From the 14th century onwards women (and more rarely men) were occasionally burned or hanged for witchcraft and heresy. The first witchcraft trial in England occurred on July 1565 in Chelmsford, Essex. Agnes Waterhouse was found guilty of 'bewitching to death' and hanged two days later. The bulk of the evidence against Mother Waterhouse was from a twelve year old child. The picture depicts the hanging of three Chelmsford witches in 1589.
