Over the years some of the land was built on and some detached from the site of New Place. However, in the 1860s, James Orchard Halliwell led a campaign to raise money to get the whole area back under single ownership and to maintain it as a memorial to Shakespeare. This was completed in 1870, and in 1891 the property was vested in the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.
