The sharp aretes that surround the cwms at the top of the Nant Ffrancon valley were formed by ice plucking. Tryfan mountain at the bottom of the photograph is the most sharply defined arete. Ice from here moved north to carve the Nant Ffrancon valley and small streams frm the cwms now drain into the Afon (River) Ogwen.

The cwms have steep vertical back wal formed by the rotational movement of the ice. A lip is formed at the front of the corrie.
