The glaciation of the Cwm Idwal and the Nant Ffrancon valley was part of the much larger glaciation of Snowdonia and has been a complicated story for much of the last 100,000 years. As the ice sheets melted individual glaciers were left in north facing valleys, often hanging above the Nant Ffrancon and other main valleys. During the last re-advance of the ice some 12,000 years ago small cwns were carved into the mountain tops and larger cwms like Idwal held advanceing glaciers.
