'Zwinger' is a short and rather unattractive name for a building that is anything but. It was originally constructed in the early 18th century for a Saxony prince (Dresden is the capital of Saxony). Zwinger was a supreme example of the Baroque architectural style popular at the time. Its bold design was simple but exquisitely enhanced by the decorative work of sculptor Balthasar Permoser. During the war it was badly damaged in the bombing raids of February 13th 1945, but was among the first to be rebuilt and today the quadrangle of pavilions play host to a series of galleries.
