The present church of Dunmow is all that remains of Dunmow Priory. It is only the south aisle of what was a magnificent collegiate church built for the joint use of the parish and of the priory. It stands (divided from the public road by a cornfield) four miles from the town of Dunmow. This priory, is said to be the resting-place of Robin Hood's Maid Marian or Matilda.
