Oilseed rape is a "break crop" - one that helps improve the soil and yield of cereal crops planted afterwards, in particular wheat. It cannot be grown too regularly in the same field or the risk of disease builds up. Oilseed rape is always grown as part of a rotation and rarely returns to the same field more than one year in six. Around 400,000 hectares of oil seed rape is grown annually. It is an important crop and currently the UK is about 90% self sufficient. Oilseed rape is used to produce vegetable oil for cooking and food processing.
