Maize is a domesticated form of a wild grass. It was introduced to the UK in the early part of the twentieth century. It is grown largely for forage, as the UK summers are not warm enough to ripen the crop. It has become the most important forage after grass with around 100,000 hectares grown annually, mainly in the south of the country. Nearly all is ensiled to produce a quality, high-energy silage for the winter feeding of livestock. Forage maize is relatively easy to grow and is drought tolerant. It is drilled or planted in May and ensiled for silage in September or October. Picture taken Odell Wold, Bedfordshire, August 2005
