Nowadays the straw left after harvesting has relatively little value and it is mostly chopped up and spread by the combine and then ploughed into the ground to maintain the soils organic matter. In the past the straw would have been carefully saved for use in thatching and as bedding or feed for animals. Old Warden Beds, August 2005
