A spiny ridged shrub (1-4m) of the rose family and plum genus. It grows in hedgerows, scrub and wood borders. It flowers April - May, the flowers are white and similar to those of Hawthorn. In late summer it produces blue-black globular fruits. Pictured at the Old Warden railway cutting late August 2005.
