This wood in Bedforshire is run by the Forestry Commission. At the beginning of the twentieth century woodland was only 5% of Britain – and falling. It is now nearly 12% - and rising. The forestry commission bases its forestry policies and practices on sustainability, -social, economic and environmental. In 2004 8.8 million tonnes of UK timber (roundwood) was delivered to primary wood processors, 5.0 million tones of sawlogs to sawmills, 1.5 million tonnes of roundwood to wood-based panel mills and 0.7 million tonnes to integrated pulp and paper mills. The woods and forests also provide recreational areas and wildlife habitats. Pictured early August 2005.
