A tall herb (to 120cm) with rose-purple flowers that grows on waysides, woodlands, ditches, old industrial areas. It has long narrow fruits that split to release plumed seeds. Its thick roots can also send up new shoots, which spread horizontally. It also has the name fireweed as it thrives on disturbed ground and frequently colonises ground that has been cleared by fire. Pictured early September 2005 near Stevington Bedfordshire
