This robust, tall irregular branched plant flowers from June - October. It grows to 30-90cm and produces bright yellow flowers. The stem, leaves and flowerheads are all covered with stiff bristles. On the leaves some of the hairs grow from small white sports making the plant easy to identify. Its generic name picris refers to the bitter milky sap that it exudes if the stem is broken. Despite this they were once boiled and eaten and also used for making pickles. Pictured on wasteground near houses in Bedford early September 2005.
