A common flower of cultivated land. It flowers July to September with white star shaped flowers. The fruits are green when young ripening to black (as shown in this picture). Like Bittersweet it contain the poisonous alkaloid -solanine. However its Latin name Solanum comes from the word 'solace' and is a reference to the former use of the plants leaves as a compress to ease burns and boils. Pictured at Stagsden Beds late September 2005.
