This plant looks like a young puffball fungi but is harder. It is at first cream, then yellow and finally black. It is between 4 to 8 cm in diameter and grows in woods or wood edges, particularly under Birch trees. It can be found from July to December. Pictured near Stevington, Bedfordshire -Mid October 2005.
