If you enlarge the picture and look carefully at the base of this fungi, you will see that it has a cap like volva. Only the Volvariella and Amanita fungi have this. This mushroom is one of the larger Rosegills and grows in nutrient rich places such as compost heaps and arable fields (as pictured here). It has a sticky conical cap that is blueish grey-brown when young but flattens out to a creamy brown when old. The gills are free from the stem and a creamy-pink colour. The volva is white to pale grey. Picture taken at Old Warden, Bedfordshire mid October 2005.
