This mushroom is one of the larger Rosegills and grows in nutrient rich places such as compost heaps and arable fields (as pictured here). It has a sticky conical cap that is blueish grey-brown when young but flattens out to a creamy brown when old. The gills are free from the stem and a creamy-pink colour. The volva, at the base of the stalk, is white to pale grey. Picture taken at Old Warden, Bedfordshire mid October 2005.
