A roughly hairy stemmed plant that growns extensively on the margin of arable land and on waste ground. It flowers from May to October. The plant is one of the most ancient pests of arable land. It grows after ploughing when the seed are brought to the surface. The seeds can lie dormant many years. It was once used as a boiled vegetable. Pictured at Old Warden, Bedfordshire - October 2005. The field had been ploughed a few week earlier.
