This plant was grown as a condiment over 2000 years ago. In the 13th century cooks began grinding up the peppery seed to make mustard. Today it has mainly been replaced by a related species, rape, and grows mainly as a weed on arable land. It has also been used to cure colds and chest ailments. Pictured at Old Warden Bedfordshire, late November 2005 with frost on the leaves.
