This flower sheds its petals after a single day but may produce over 400 flowers in succession over the summer. It usually flowers from May to October but these plants were pictured appropriately enough on Armistice Day (11th November) on disturbed ground near Bedfordshire. This is probably the species of poppy that grew on the fields of Flanders after the battles in WWI. Poppy seeds can lie dormant and grow rapidly on disturbed soil. Here they are brightening up waste ground on a building site.
