A species similar to the blackthorn but with twigs that are not thorny. The flowers appear with the leaves usually April to May. It grows in woods and hedgerows as an escapee. The closely related Cherry Plum (Prunus cerasifera), an introduction from Eastern Europe and Asia, also grows in woodlands and hedgerows and is usually the earliest to flower in March to April. This plant was budding and flowering in early December 2005! It was pictured in Cople Woods, Bedfordshire.
