This plant is very common in hedgerows throughout England and Wales. It is the ancestor of the modern garden rose. It was a valuable medicinal plant and from the hips (pictured) Rosehip syrup, which is rich in vitamin C, is produced. It flowers June - July with the hips forming August - September. Photographed mid December 2005 at Stevington Bedfordshire. The hips often remain on the plant after the leaves have fallen - colouring hedgerows red.
