A large tree that can reach a height of 30-40 metres, with rough, furrowed brown bark and crooked branches. It produces yellowy-brown flowers in May, male flowers on pendants and female flowers on short stalks. The acorn fruits develop late summer / early autumn. It can live for up to 800 years. Pictured at Cople Woods, Bedfordshire mid December 2005. This tree has an oak gall caused by a gall wasp, a small insect.
