The Portland stone was formed around 150 million years ago in the Late Jurassic period. It is a fine-grained. massive limestone, which was originally deposited in a calm shallow sea. Nodules of chert a hard flint like substance of almost pure silica help fortify the rock further. The rocks contain ammonite fossils.
