Durdle Door is situated at the projecting western end of a bastion of upturned Purbeck stone and Portland Freestone. The softer rocks on either side of Durdle Door has been eroded away to form bays. Durdle Door itself formed when the sea exploited a weakness (a fault) in the rocks and gradual erosion has resulted in the formation of an arch. This will eventually collapse to leave a stack. This picture shows the promontory from the cliff-top. This runs approximately east west.
