The area of Durdle Door is open to the southerly gales, where the sea has breached the chalk, erosion and weathering of the soft Wealden clay soils is occurring and a little bay is developing on the landward side. Between Durdle-Door and the cliffs a string of off shore rocks of Portland stone extend further west indicating the original coastline, the first of which (the Bull) is visible in this picture. There was probably once an extension of the stone-wall to this with an arch that collapsed long ago.
