This picture shows the west beach at Durdle door looking westward towards the chalk cliffs. The Wealden sands and clays are to the bottom of the picture, with the grey coloured Gault Clay in the centre. Beyond this, hidden in the picture by the cliff line, is the upper green sand. These rocks are prone to erosion and slippage hence the bay will continue to deepen over time. The Gault clay is prone to cause landslides. In the Lulworth area these are small because the strata is almost vertical and it does not lie under large units of Upper Greensand and Chalk (for more on land slippage see Black Venn).
