To the east of Lulworth, the soft Wealden and Greensand rocks have been eroded away exposing the chalk. Man of War cove is a saucer shaped beach that is growing at the expense of the chalk cliffs. Each year there are fresh slicks of milky white water giving and indication of the continual slippage that is occurring. Through erosion by the battering of the waves and pebbles (abrasion or corrasion), corrosion as the limestone rock reacts with the sea water and by weathering by rain and frost that can shatter the rocks – especially if frost follows prolonged rain and the rocks fissures are full of moisture– frost shattering – which is common in chalk rocks.
