The sea exploits each small cove, enlarging it until it joint the next. The headlands between the coves are usually breached across the softer Wealden beds or by gradual erosion of the chalk – with waves undercutting the base of the near vertical chalk cliffs causing small caves and rock falls. The off shore Portland stone stacks (as can be seen on this photograph), are the remains of an older coastline.
