Despite originally being associated with the Roman god -Bacchus, in the past, it was ivy not holly that was usually used to decorate churches. If you look carefully at the carvings in churches you are more likely to find ivy than any other evergreen. Ivy became linked with the Virgin Mary and was also seen as a symbol of man's need to cling to god. Pictured at Stevington Church, Bedfordshire.
