Originally Ivy was used to decorate the exterior of domestic buildings, never the inside. However later in the 18th century, holly and ivy were used together to create kissing balls to substitute for mistletoe when it was thought to be too evil for use as Christmas decoration. It was considered to be bad luck if there was more ivy than holly in the ball. Later mistletoe was added back into the mix.
