The first Santa Claus or Father Christmas lived many years ago and was called Nicholas. He was a Bishop who lived in the fourth century AD in a place called Myra in Asia Minor (now Turkey). His parents died when he was young leaving him a lot of money. Although a very rich man he was also very kind and had a reputation for helping the poor and giving secret gifts to people who needed it. He died on the 6th December in either 345 or 352 AD and was made a saint because of his kindness. Today others now provide the gifts to children over the world.
