Raindeer have been associated with Santa since Victorian times. They are shown in pictures in a Victorian book and the poem written in 1882, by Dr Clement Clarke Moore for his children, describes the eight reindeer and gives them their names. They became really well known after a song written in 1949 about Rudolf.
