One of the main reasons we have the custom of giving presents at Christmas, is to remind us of the presents given to Jesus - Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh by the Magi or wise men. Tradition has the gifts given by three wise men because there were three presents. It does not say how many wise men in the bible. According to medieval legend, the names of three were Melchoir, King of Arabia (gold); Gaspar, King of Tarsus (myrrh); and Balthasar, King of Ethiopia (frankincense).
