Frankincense was one of the gifts given to Jesus by the Magi or Wise Men in the Christmas story. It is a sweet smelling gum resin that comes from certain species of Boswellia trees that grow in the desert. At the time of Christ, it grew in Arabia, India, and Ethiopia. It is used as a purfume and oil. Legend says that it was presented by Balthasar, a king from Ethiopia or Saba. Frankincense is the purest incense. When it burns it produces a white smoke, symbolizing prayers and praises The gift showed that people would worship Jesus.
