As printing methods improved, Christmas cards were produced in large numbers from about 1860. Cards became even more popular when they could be posted in an unsealed envelope for one halfpenny - half the price of an ordinary letter. By the early 1900s, the custom had spread over Europe. It became especially popular in Germany. Early cards usually showed people celebrating or had a religious theme (as opposite). However nursery rhymes, flowers and village scenes were also popular in Victorian times.
