In late Victorian times, robins and snow-scenes became popular. The postmen at that time were nicknamed 'Robin Postmen' because of the red uniforms they wore. Snow-scenes were popular because at the start of the Victorian era, (1837) Britain was at the end of a mini ice age (from about 1550 to 1850). During this time, in London, a winter fair was held on the frozen River Thames! In the early 1800’s, in particular, and again in 1836, winter was very cold and snow become associated with Christmas. Dickins popular book -'A Christmas Carol' written in 1843 also re-enforced the link. This tradition still exists today although recent winters have been warmer.
