Christmas cards have been a part of Christmas tradition for over a 150 years. The idea of letting people know they are wished well goes back even further. In 15th century Germany people presented gifts called 'Andachtsbilder', a sort of a greeting card for the home. They had religious pictures and the message 'Ein gut selig jar', meaning 'A good and blessed year.' Then in the 18th century large sheets of writing paper, printed with engraved borders could be purchased on which to write messages. The Christmas card drew on these traditions. Nowadays, cards have all sorts of pictures on them. There are humorous cards, winter snow scenes and cards with Santa to name a few.
