Caroling, or rejoicing loudly in song, is a very old tradition. The word 'carol' means a dance of celebration. It is said that the first Christmas carol was sung by the angels announcing Christ's birth to the shepherds. Carols were first sung in Europe thousands of years ago, but these were not Christmas Carols. They were songs sung at the Winter Solstice celebration around the 21st December. Early Christians took over the Pagan Solstice celebrations for Christmas and gave people Christian songs to sing instead of pagan ones. Pictured Ampthill, Bedfordshire 2005.
