By the 1200s, most people had lost interest in celebrating Christmas. This was changed when St. Francis of Assisi, started the tradition of the nativity play in 1223 in Italy. Later, the people in the plays sang songs or 'canticles' telling the Christmas story. Rather than in Latin (as the early carols were), the songs were sung in a language the people could understand and became popular and spread throughout Europe. Pictured Ampthill, Bedfordshire 2005.
