Early carols from the 15th and 16th centuries, were only loosely based on the Christmas story, and often seen as entertaining rather than religious. Minstrels started singing these carols and the words were changed for the local people wherever they were travelling. In 1647, Oliver Cromwell and the Puritans came to power and the celebration of Christmas was stopped. However, the carols survived and, in Victorian times, became very popular again when two men called William Sandys and Davis Gilbert collected lots of old Christmas music from villages in England.
