Before carol singing in public became popular, there were official carol singers called 'Waits'. Between the 16th and 18th centuries, watchmen and, later, groups of people led by an official (such as a council leader) who were allowed to take money from the public, sang carols in some towns. At one time Christmas Eve was also known as 'watchnight' or 'waitnight'. Pictured Ampthill, Bedfordshire 2005.
